  1. Dennett is one of the few philosophers who's actually keeping philosophy relevant and useful in the modern scientific world.

  2. Does anyone think debate should be simply sharing your point of view, or is it more trying to persuade others into believing it? Perhaps simply sharing your view is actually more effective in persuading people as it doesn't cause the recipient to put up barriers and become defensive. I find simply sharing your point of view easily said than done.

  3. 98% of vertebrate biomass. And yet, religious science deniers still can't comprehend how our little old species could POSSIBLY affect the environment of the entire planet…
    Go figure.

  4. I'm glad Dennett made those points about things not being intrinsically sweet or sexy or funny or any of those things. We like those things because they are useful tools for evolution. It seems like a benign difference at first, but it is a crucial difference to make. I try to explain it to my friends and they just have no idea what I'm talking about or think I'm just playing with words. Now I can redirect them here, hell yeah.

  5. GOD – why can't more professors be like him? He's both dry and humorous at the same time as being informative and enlightening

  6. Mindless termites a mindful humans…is something that was said some 150 years ago by Marx..nothing new under the sky….but perfecty explained.
The basic difference is that when a bee is constructing something it does that without thining, if a human is constructing something, first he makes a plan in his head.

  7. Is it possible for you to make it easier for us viewers/followers to be directed to the next part of your videos? e.g.
    – after this video I had no idea if there was a part 3. Yes we could use search but after each video it is tedious.
    – after the part 1 of this video there are no annotations and none of the pre-rendered mini videos at the end suggested there was a part 2.

So perhaps you could add annotations or add it in the description.

Oh and also, the 2 suggestions at the end are so random sometimes, e.g. here it is Sam Harris pt 5… why? Why not pt 1?

  8. I thought he was going to mention something about men liking big breasts when he showed the baby slide. we're really just wired up to look for the best tools to feed a baby

  9. Oh, thank you so much for getting us acquainted with the most brilliant people! I certainly read at least one of his books (had to check with Goodreads bc I read almost too much), but this is the first time I hear and see him speak, and it is as good, as could be expected. I hope he know how some of us treasure him.

  10. I don't know.. Dennett is not my cup of tea. He's almost always too philosophical for my taste.. I'd take Harris, Hitch or Dawkins any time of the day over Dennett.. SOmetimes I just can't follow him or he becomes just too boring to follow.
