My Neurons, My Self

World Science Festival

With ever more refined techniques for measuring complex brain activity, scientists are challenging the understanding of thought, memory and emotion–what we have traditionally called “the self.” How do electrical and chemical currents translate to self-awareness? And why does the brain produce consciousness at all? Join a discussion among eminent neuroscientists, philosophers and psychologists who are redefining what it means to be human.

This program is part of the Big Ideas Series, made possible with support from the John Templeton Foundation.

Original Program Date: June 5, 2016
MODERATOR: Bill Blakemore
PARTICIPANTS: Martha Farah, Joy Hirsch, Jesse Prinz, Daphna Shohamy

  1. Hello, YouTubers. The World Science Festival is looking for enthusiastic translation ambassadors for its YouTube translation project. To get started, all you need is a Google account.

Check out My Neurons, My Self to see how the process works: http://www.youtube.com/timedtext_video?ref=share&v=W5kikQ2tjhQ

To create your translation, just type along with the video and save when done.

The World Science Festival strives to cultivate a general public that's informed and awed by science. Thanks to your contributions, we can continue to share the wonder of scientific discoveries with the world.

  2. Greatly interesting stuff, and it summarizes how while the search for freedom almost seems futile without some degree of acknowledgment of a cosmic super awareness, spirit, the divine… whatever "word" one might prefer
    .

  3. Never say never, I think we will be able to experience other subjective experiences through the use of quantum physics. Capturing the quantum fields of other's and processing it in our consciousness.

  4. Couldn't get past the first guest speaker, which is a shame because it's a fascinating topic. He asked what she studied, all she had to say was real time neurological activity during communication. Instead, she waffled on endlessly about sociology and the fancy equipment she got to play with. Bait and switch.

  5. My self is whatever I am experiencing in this moment. Weather or not I have memory of my past, or anxieties about the future. It consists of all that adds up to the moment that I am currently in.

  6. Interesting discussion though not as sophisticated and deep as I expected it shall be when I started the video.
If we had people like Martha Nassubam, Jeffrey Shwartz, and Joshua Greene, it would have been more satisfying.

Absurd that she threw Free will out of the window and didn't consider the idea of "Free Won't", though surely she can find studies that support her say.

  7. The under fabric of our universe, the mushroom mycelium, the brain. Convergent evolution. Maybe we will become part of the universal consciousness with a network of beings throughout the universe?

  8. The study of how the brain works will not answer cultural questions (moral judgment, best languages, etc)

But the example of color vision is not mysterious anymore. We now know that color is exclusively defined by the frequency of the photon. When I see a flower with iridescent purple and ask a friend if he/she see the same color, the answer could be different. Most humans have 3 cones which respond to red, green and blue. But some have 4 cones, so they perceive more rich set of color. Other we call "color blind" may actually see color but using only 2 cones or one, so they can not give distinct names to colors that most humans perceive as distinct.

  9. We live in the present only. The past is represented by our distorted memories. My memory is what makes myself different from anybody else. If my memory get erased, I die (Short Circuit 2). However, it could be not that bad if I can learn the same thing in a shorter time.
It is refreshing to hear so many people who bring their own opinion in a complementary way. The questions are pertinent and help the conversation to progress.

  10. A very easy example of how the `Self' of one individual becomes `incorporated' with and by another `Self' is to observe a long-term coupling (married or otherwise) of two individuals. They will mimic or duplicate actions of behavior of each other, the more dominate of the two to be the action of behavior most expressed. In a hetero couple, often you will find the male wearing the same clothes (color especially) of the female as this component of their relationship is typically dominated by the female. A lengthy amount of time with another individual and the dominant characteristic of each will cross-fertilize between the individuals concerned. This can be in speech, likes, dislikes, color, fashion, etc., etc…

  11. Our neuro network filters reality down to something we can relate to. This means that every you think you see is suspect. Just one example: Look up on a clear, sunny day and look at the "blue" sky. A colour analyser will tell you the sky is green (from ionised oxygen molecules).

  12. i have been trying to show people for several years now that the universe and our brains look and act the same almost exact way!!

  13. so are these all materialists so believe the brain creates consciousness – rather than consciousness being fundamental –

  14. so the universe is a living brain,  that's so huge that we don't see the cell walls, or any body fluid,  as the atoms that make up that fluid is the planets moons and suns.  this is not proof there is a real god. but it dose show we could live inside something much bigger,  lol.   now you need to see if there is life on the surface of protons and electrons in atoms ,  remember  in the universe suns and planets and moons are separated and flung away separated for ever into the soup of existence ie look at planets being like light photons, and moons are the electrons and suns are protons or what ever arrangement make more cense to you ie the suns and its planets and moons make up molecule's and the molecule's make up the galaxy's and the galaxy's are the cells in the body  ( I do think I have confused my self it just seams to simple, the truth hidden in plain sight hidden so well you would never look,  untill the day you see it for what it is,  a method of preservation  preserving existence it self,  if the snake ever lets go of it grip matter will simply vanish

  16. I found this liberating. It is clear that the self is in a sense an illusion. We are free. We are changing. We are the experience itself. No we's!
