Smashing the “Ivory Tower” of Art | Betty Chen | TEDxRyersonU

For the general public, there exists an “ivory tower” of sorts, when it comes to the fine arts, causing us keep our distance and leave it to the “art academics” of the world. In her talk, Betty Chen aims to shatter that notion, speaking about how much value there is for everyone, in experiencing and participating in art.

Betty Chen knows art. As an interior design graduate from Ryerson University in 2012, gallery tour guide at the Art Gallery of Ontario, and content curator and presenter of an informational art show called Articulations on YouTube, Betty’s career is dedicated to getting people to care about art. During her time at Ryerson, she always kept herself busy, whether she was volunteering abroad, working, or planning the Ryerson School of Interior Design year-end show. Today, Betty focuses her efforts on making art accessible and understandable to everyone. She believes in removing the barriers that make the art world appear elite and alienating.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

  1. Bunch of bullcrap. Although all art has both theory and conceot, good art needs no intellectual explanation for it to work. If it does not move the audience without first explaining what it is all about then it failed. It failed because it failed to communicate to the audience its essence is, wether it be intellectual or a feeling. It becomes a self serving piece of marketing gimmick that is elitist. I understand what she is saying but i totally disagree with it. It is over intellectualized and is lazy art.
