The Flicker Filter Model of Consciousness with Imants Barušs

New Thinking Allowed with Jeffrey Mishlove

Imants Barušs is Professor of Psychology at King’s University College at the University of Western Ontario, Canada. He is author of The Personal Nature of Notions of Consciousness: A Theoretical and Empirical Examination of the Role of the Personal in the Understanding of Consciousness, Science as a Spiritual Practice, Alterations of Consciousness: An Empirical Analysis for Social Scientists, and Authentic Knowing: The Convergence of Science and Spiritual Aspiration. He is coauthor, with Julia Mossbridge, of Transcendent Mind: Revisioning the Science of Consciousness.

Here he describes the two main elements of the Flicker Filter model of consciousness. The “flicker” is related to Julian Barbour’s notion that time itself consists of discrete “now” moments. He proposes that these moments are mysteriously held together by fields of meaning that exist within a larger consciousness, not embedded within time. This model allows for all of the phenomena reported in the parapsychological literature. It also eliminates many of the faulty notions that Barušs associates with materialist or physicalist ontologies.

New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in “parapsychology” ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980). He is past-vice-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology, and is the recipient of the Pathfinder Award from that association for his contributions to the study of consciousness.

  1. We may indulge in some speculations based on what we know of the wireless waves, which, as I said, are all we can recognize of a vast series of vibrations which theoretically must exist. If the thought waves are similar to the wireless waves, they must pass from the brain and flow endlessly around the world and the universe. The body and the skull and other solid obstacles would form no obstruction to their passage, as they pass through the ether which surrounds the molecules of every substance, no matter how solid and dense.
You ask if there would not be constant interference and confusion if other people’s thoughts were flowing through our brains and setting up thoughts in them that did not originate with ourselves?
How do you know that other men’s thoughts are not interfering with yours now? I have noticed a good many phenomena of mind disturbance that I have never been able to explain.

  2. there is only now, from beginning to end. imagine a sea of dominos, the present is presence. so, be present ? (now is not the same as the present). the present flips those dominos.

it is always ever only now. mind flickers. we are watching a movie in our heads unless we get out to see the real.

wind doesn’t move, nor flag. mind moves.

  3. This interview was fanatastic. Love the idea of remote-viewing one's own mind!! I had some correspondences with Imants Baruss over 12 years ago when I was involved with a systematic study in dreamwork and have been following his work , on and off (no pun intended) , ever since.

  4. Consciousness can be made an object of study by oneself because the self is not consciousness; consciousness is a tool of the self—at least, this was taught many thousands of years ago in raja yoga. The scientific method is turned inwards to study the nature of reality. I discovered the Yoga Sutras of Pantajali in 1969. There is only a problem with studying so-called "subjective" reality when we identify as inside the picture. As long as we think we are the bodymind consciousness, we cannot make our ultimate nature a subject of study. We have to get outside the system, to what Eastern philosophy calls the "true" self, which is our unchanging self beyond space and time and matter. When we identify with our true self, we can study all of manifested creation because we are now in the observation deck.

  5. Thank you, Jeffrey, for introducing us to Imants, his ideas and research. This was a delightful interchange between you two!

  6. Thank you so much for introducing Imants Barušs. His ideas and work are highly fascinating. Also, I am glad to see you keeping up the good work since when I first met you back in the 90s at PRS in Los Angeles. The question that drives me is how to bring the congeries of new paradigms (W. James referred to it as the pluralistic universe) into mainstream academia which has slavishly devoted itself to reductionist materialism for well over 100 years. Mechanistic materialism leads inevitably to nihilism or the belief that life is without purpose and therefore there is no such thing as right and wrong. That pernicious belief has been the bane of humanity. J. W. v Goethe and William James were correct in pointing out this seed of evil in materialism.

  7. Seth, in the Seth books channeled by Jane Roberts, speaks much about time, time being an illusion caused by our physical senses. Past, present, future exist simultaneously as well as probable pasts, presents and futures. (We can change the past, if we like;.) The physical framework blinks on an off millions of times per second being fed from an energy source in a different framework.

  8. Jeffrey Mishlove you REALLY need to interview TOM CAMPBELL! He is working on new double slit experiments to validate his theory of everything. Tom Campbell's theory explains very well what this discussion was about. Tom is a NASA physicist AND consciousness explorer. He was one of the main scientist who worked at the Monroe institute to study consciousness back in the 1970"s. I sure wish you could interview him!!!! I love your shows BTW.

  9. Matter should not be a whipping boy. That is binary thinking. Triadic thought sees all reality as one and reality as all. We are largely babes in the woods, but we are better when we acknowledge mystery and ignorance and accept all possibilities that make sense to us.

  10. The anecdote about the nde pre-experiencing two months of life reminded me of Jane Robert's the world view of Paul Cezanne, intro or chapter one. Life experiences were layered and dimensional. Wish I understood this flicker stuff better.

  11. You might consider reading what the Zen master Dogen said about time. Google Dogen Uji. We are time.
Godel showed that the time of relativity is not the same as what we call time.
    Keep up the great work.

  12. Thumbs Up… This flicker theory kinda reminded me of " Alternating Current " ( as in AC vs. DC , in the electrical sense ) …got stuck with the Xmas dinner dishes & was able to sneak this interview in…. Season greetings & Thanks.

  13. Jeffrey, your friend Jack Sarfatti relates consciousness to pilot waves. This seems like a physical, but non-material model of consciousness. And these waves are not like billiard balls, because they act like a 'force without force,' that is they influence matter without Newtonian type back-reaction. According to Hegel, in my lay interpretation, the human historical process overcomes the duality of material/transcendental as we institutionalize our highest ideals in social/civic life. We are alienated from that ideal realm, and presumably from our psychic abilities, to the extent that we posit a separation or duality of meaning and ideas from mundane physical existence. According to Lee Smolin, the 'laws' of nature may evolve through selection, in other words they have a history and dont exist in some metaphysical realm outside time and the universe. They are 'emergent.' Merry Christmas!

Dr. Mishlove, you should read Lazarev Sergey Nikolaevitch books (the has 4 series of books, the first serie – 12 books, "diagnistic of karma". He made the must significant researches in history. He a bioenergetist, psychologist, healer, made his researches about informational-field structures, thauthands of people healed after reading his books including me. His site –

  15. I could listen to Imants for hours. I have communicated with discarnate entities and it's easy. They seem pretty contemptuous at times. I also use playing cards to predict the future but then wonder if I'm actually creating that future with them. They are very accurate. Hopeyfully I can find his book. I would love to actually talk to him directly.

  16. lovely and insightful, and a Canadian to boot! (The Seth Material covers the flicker/filter concept very thoroughly, and what can possibly be xp in the interregnum moments)

  17. I think Time is a Subsequent Outcome of other forces that are the rules that in conjunction compose the universal reality (fabric of the Universe..Ethic (as just an example) is a component, not of time perhaps, but of the Universe…”It Is”). I think Time and Space are separate(not space/time) at least Imcomenserate fields like dialectric and magnetic. To have motion(thereby creation) you have to have Time to start with. “You can not have the picture painted and then put it already completed on onto the canvass.”-PGM
The Planc unit may in fact suggest two sides like a crest and trough. Here you would have the in/out flicker appearance by perception unto theory and frequency is still the method….yes?
Rupert Spira says.”Time is Consciousness objectified by thought.”…(interesting perspective even if only to an aspect.)
It is always NOW. “NOW” is eternity. Our change over and though time is a ramification, and outcome. Consider only one “NOW”, and. Examine yourself within it. Then you only have one now to contend with.

  18. 21:2521:35…"opportunities for manipulating time"
Hmmm..who or what organization, under whose guidance is going to have the authority to dabble with script editing? Does conflict of interest still exist and how does that get resolved? Will the masses even know that someone is flickering around with time?
So many things start out so innocently.

  19. It may take a another century to reach the tipping point, but the limitations of materialism are going to be obvious before too much longer.

  20. All of this used to be secret knowledge; now it is YouTube fodder. In the ancient world you had to prove yourself worthy to know even a fraction of what is discussed on this channel. I guess we have let go of our fear of it ever getting in the wrong hands like has happened in every civilization collapse prior?

  21. Coming back to itself futurally, resoluteness brings itself into the Situation by making present. The character of "having been" arises from the future, and in such a way that the future which "is in the process of having been" releases from itself the Present. This phenomenon has the unity of a future which makes present in the process of having been; we designate it as 'temporality'. Only in so far as Dasein has the definite character of temporality, is the authentic potentiality-for-Being-whole of anticipatory resoluteness made possible for Dasein itself. TEMPORALITY REVEALS ITSELF AS THE MEANING OF AUTHENTIC CARE. Heidegger, Being and Time The feeling of an unbridgeable gulf between consciousness and brain-process: how does it come about that this does not come into the considerations of our ordinary life? Here we have a case of introspection not unlike that from which William James got the idea that the 'self' consisted mainly of 'peculiar motions between the head and the throat'. And James' introspection shewed, not the meaning of the word "self" (so far as it means something like "person", "human being", "he himself", "I myself"), nor any analysis of such a thing, but the state of the philosopher's attention when he says the word "self" to himself and tries to analyse its meaning. (And a good deal could be learned from this.) Wittgenstein, Philosophical Investigations

  22. "A deceptive trick is built into the way consciousness operates at every moment. Consciousness projects and constructs a cognitive object in such a way that it disowns its own creation – pretending the object is "out there" – in order to render that object capable of being appropriated. Even while what we cognize is occurring within our act of cognition, we cognize it as if it were external to our consciousness. Realization of vijñapti-mātra exposes this trick intrinsic to consciousness's workings, thereby eliminating it. When that deception is removed one's mode of cognition is no longer termed vijñāna (consciousness); it has become direct cognition (jñāna) (see above). Consciousness engages in this deceptive game of projection, dissociation, and appropriation because there is no "self." According to Buddhism, the deepest, most pernicious erroneous view held by sentient beings is the view that a permanent, eternal, immutable, independent self exists. There is no such self, and deep down we know that. This makes us anxious, since it entails that no self or identity endures forever. In order to assuage that anxiety, we attempt to construct a self, to fill the anxious void, to do something enduring. The projection of cognitive objects for appropriation is consciousness's main tool for this construction. If I own things (ideas, theories, identities, material objects), then "I am." If there are eternal objects that I can possess, then I too must be eternal. To undermine this desperate and erroneous appropriative grasping, Yogācāra texts say: Negate the object, and the self is also negated (e.g., Madhyānta-vibhāga, 1:4, 8)."

Although Yogācāras in general do not accept the existence of an external material world, according to Satyākāravāda its appearances or “aspects” (rnam pa, ākāra) reflected in consciousness have a real existence, because they are of one nature with the really existent consciousness, their creator. According to Alikākāravāda, neither external phenomena nor their appearances and/in the minds that reflect them really exist. What exists in reality is only primordial mind (ye shes, jñāna), described as self-cognition (rang rig, svasamvedana/ svasamvitti) or individually self-cognizing primordial mind (so so(r) rang gis rig pa’i ye shes).

  23. This relates to the breathing in and out model suggested in Walter Russell's Alternative Science. We need to start dealing honestly with the matter of Creation — they are talking about Heaven. They are assuming an intelligent source. This can no longer be seen as a religion versus science thing. It is an authentic versus incomplete science problem. Live with it.
